Anybody done this with less than 12" of top rail? I'm looking to build my own but I'm going to stick it in a small and compact apartment unit where I have probably 10" to fit it in. Using a mayan hammock that i'll probably hang at 30-45 degrees.

I set mine up at 10' for an 11' camping hammock. Height is 5'. The mat underneath is 9'x6'.

My Mayan hangs too low for my taste across a 10' span so I expand the frame by one foot with an extension. Takes about 30 seconds. I'm waiting on another Mayan that isn't as wide and will hang better across 10' rather than 11'.

i finally ordered some fittings for my own. tarps.com is taking some time to ship, but I’m excited. want to make it easily collapsible for home use, so I may end up with a center coupler.

I can’t find ready-made 12” amsteel loops, so I may have to mess with suspension a bit.

so, i told myself last year that splicing amsteel was more than i wanted to do, too involved, no time, etc.
But, it turns out it’s way more simple than I thought. 12” continuous loops are very straightforward!

I actually JUST stripped some 18awg wire to practice with until I can pick up a splicing fid.

All my couplers are here, just need to pick up some rail and a pipe cutter.

got the spurtle 2.0 together! 2 snags: 1) the 1 3/8 fence rail I got is actually 1 5/16. more flex and noise in the whole thing than I like. 2) my math was bad… my 12’ hammock won’t fit in my small workshop, so I am hanging a bit more slack than I like. once I finish my DIY 11’, I’ll be in business.
$100 or so for something I can throw in the trunk! thanks to everyone for this and the parent thread.

edit: first night on it. took an hour to settle from the load, re-snugged the eyebolts twice and it held steady.
