I think your first picture is a better way than second picture--because you can heed Shug's advice "On the knot, not on the toggle" good advice it is. I can be wrong--further study may be required.

The first picture. You want it on the knot and behind the toggle. This way if for some reason it slipped off the knot the toggle would catch the line and maybe save you from hitting the ground. The second picture if the line slipped you would hit the ground

Marlin spike hitch - which way?

Baka Dasai, marlin spike hitch might work with whoopie sling as shown in second picture. But some hangers use first picture method--so they can slide whoopie into hitch before tightening hitch--this helps keep whoopie sling from falling off marlin spike hitch and toggle--if it's windy or you are getting in and out of hammock several times. To wedge whoopie into MSH--tie it same as first picture and BEFORE tightening pull whoopie down against strap (above hitch) and then tighten hitch. Now whoopie will be wedged into MSH and will still be
"On the knot, Not on the toggle" and it will be kinda stuck there--so it has a greatly reduced chance of falling off while lollygagging. Maybe someone can show a picture of what I described or a video. I need all the help I can get.
I'd like to visit your far away land someday.

I do it as shown in the second picture. Never had problems with my whoopies slipping off. I also use a tiny toggle on the CL that's cow-hitched to the end of my hammock....the toggle is also cow-hitched (larks head). The loop on the end of the whoopie is placed over it. I've never had the loop fall off it either and that toggle is about 1.75" max. But you need to do what you're comfortable with.

In the first picture the CL is behind the toggle but setting right on top of the knot. If the CL slides down the top of the knot, all the pressure will be put on the toggle (NOT GOOD). In the second picture, the CL is behind the knot but in front of the toggle. The CL can easily pop off the knot and the toggle cannot stop it (NOT GOOD). So a mixture of the two pictures, put the CL behind the toggle and sink it down behind the knot. Watch Shug's video and do it exactly like that.
