MSR's Mini groundhog stakes work great in churt, clay, and brown dirt. the slight spiral keeps rocks from bending them and anchors great when windy and wet. Have not tested them in sand as of yet but as long as its not powder and more like a damp beach sand I would say they will hold. For me I think the Ti hooks are weak and flimsy, the Ti staples are much better along with the Ti nails. As for the carbon from what I have seen they look like a nail shoved inside a carbon arrow, that may have been pre drilled or glued so I think I could make my own.....

Kobe beef. MSR Groundhogs, MSR Groundhog Mini, any "Y" or "V" shaped 7000 series aluminum stake. These cover 90% of terrain and are strong enough for most heavy winds.

    Mmmmm, steak...

I currently use the Y-stakes from Warbonnet for my XLC hammock and Superfly tarp and the thinner Titanium Hook Stakes from Dutch for my Tyvek ground tarp. Next time I will go with the X-Long 9in Titanium Hook Stakes from Antigravity Gear.

Dirt yes, Sand, I don't know. I got like 4 of the 9 inch ones and 4 of the shorter ones. I usually take 4 of the shorter ones, 2 long ones and then I have two Shepard hooks that are dual purpose (Calera Cone set up) to also use. I would think they would work to a point. I would bury them in sand or put a rock over them if you are expecting any wind (like on a beach). They are more bulky however, but they and my CF tarp are stored in the pocket outside my main pack.

Wow, really? To all the Y stakes. Every time I take a set out it ends up mangled and kinked. I've never bent one of the shepherd hooks. My guess is that where I go is all dirt-dirt, not any sandy or loose packed stuff.

MSR groundhogs are what I have used and been very happy.

Might try something else if you do a lot of hanging above lots of snow or sand.

The actual MSR groundhogs I believe are forged/tempered or something. They're much stronger than the Coghlan's knockoffs I normally buy. I've mangled a few of those by hitting roots. There's a crazy long thread on here about stakes. I hope you have some time:

Same here, MSR Groundhogs. I use them in hardened clay around these parts, no problem.

I like the Sidewinder staples. They are extremely light and hold extremely well.
