    First experience with hammock camping

So in the last month I have purchased two hammocks and various gear, purchased items to make some of my own gear and seem to be addicted. I started out by sleeping a few nights on my back screened in porch in around 70 degree weather and thought I was ready to take the plunge. So this last weekend I took off for three nights with the hammock, I did bring my tent as a backup but didn't use it. Well to my surprise it got down to 33 the first night. Add to that the fact that I got in a hurry when setting up my hammock and didn't get it even close to level, and it made for a night to remember. I am thankful for the closed cell pad and 0 degree bag that I brought, but as you can guess, this was not turning out like I thought it would. The good thing is that though I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer I usually learn from my mistakes. The next two nights were 39 degrees and 49 degrees. I evidently learned what I needed because I was warm and slept like a baby both nights. I have never been able to sleep on the ground very well and always wake up stiff and sore. That was not the case last weekend as I woke up rested and without any stiffness. I am a total gear freak and imagine that I will have a room full of hammock gear before too long. But I am having a blast.

===>Welcome to the trees! Glad you persevered. Yup, this is definitely an addictive hobby! Read here, watch the videos here, ask any questions you may have. Go to a local group hang, see and try many types of rigs. Then get a second job. You will need it, I am sure!

    Again, welcome to the family!

Welcome from another newbie! Sounds like you are already ahead of some of us (me?) on the learning curve. It took a couple of disastrous nights on separate occasions for things to start clinking for me. The DIY stuff is for sure addicting; I have several projects lined up with the budget officer.

The more you do it the better it gets. Just think how well you will sleep once you have a good under-quilt and can ditch the pad. Good luck!

Hey congrats on surviving and keeping your tent put away. It only gets easier and more addicting every night you have a successful sleep in the hammock. I spent a year on a pad and my sleeping bag before I made a DIY UQ. Made it a couple nights into the negative temps and was warm. Remember, you don't want to keep your hammock level when setting it up. Foot end is about 6 inches higher so you don't slide down. First time I was told that I couldn't believe it. When sleeping in a tent first thing you want to do is make sure your head is above your feet so you don't wake up with a massive headache.

Plus one on the foot end being higher, I like mine almost a foot higher.
By all means, let's argue about whether or not a hammock will hurt a tree. All the while ignoring the fact that there is an island of garbage the size of Texas floating in the Pacific ocean. Or how about the fact that over 75% of the world's nuclear reactors are leaking...
