    Hammock newb....break it down.

I am sure this has been asked a million times prior, sorry in advance for not using the search function

OK, so I am a ground dweller tarp user considering getting off the dirt. Are there any advantages beyond comfort, cleanliness, and maybe a little drier? Looks like comfort could be off set by weight penalty and site limitations....what am I missing?

    Thank you in advance.

If sleeping on the ground doesn't bother you then you're not missing anything.

However, lightweight hammock setups that rival UL tart/tent setups are available. If by limited site selection you mean that you regularly camp where there are no trees then yes, that could be a problem.

Personally even if a hammock system was substantially heavier and two appropriate trees were harder to find I'd still hammock. It's THAT MUCH more comfortable.

    Good luck!

You don't need level ground to hammock. I took a small weight hit switching but I'm so glad I did.

Are hammocks perfect...no. But they are far more comfortable to sleep in than on the ground and when its time to get up you can stand right up instead of crawling out and then standing up.

Normally I recommend one try and find a group hang to check out different setups but that might be hard to do over there.

Only time I got to Maui, The Terminator and I were flying to the big island and the plane lost an engine so we had to make an emergency landing at Maui.

If sleeping on the ground makes sense to you, continue doing so. Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead on the ground ever again. The difference in comfort is just astounding.

lol isn't increased comfort reason enough? I always laugh when I see people looking for long lists of reasons why they should hammock. It's about sleep. Sleep should be comfortable.

I have to disagree. A comfortable nights sleep in the woods is never offset by a few extra ounces.

Welcome to Hammock Forums. My advice to you is try it you may like it. You're correct that it's hard to equal the weight of a light weight tent and setup but it's just so much more comfortable and I'm willing to carry an extra pound or two a bit shorter distance to have the comfort level I experience backpacking. I'm not really concerned about 3-4 or more less miles as they will still be there when I return.

    Hammock newb....break it down.

11ft hammock 1.0 material with amsteel continuous loops is 8 ounces. 2 ounce Kevlar straps. 5 oz bug net, 10 oz or so for cuben fiber tarp guy lines and stakes.

Looks like 25 ounces for hammock system. zpacks cuben fiber tent weighs 15.5 ounces.

The above hammock system weighs a whopping 9.5 ounces more than the tent.
