    2 3/4 underquilts

So I was curious if anyone has ever used 2 3/4 length underquilts overlapped to cover the equivalent of a full length underquilt? I have a Hammock Gear Phoenix 40 and a Mountain Wilderness Gear 30. Both are 3/4 length. I don't have the funds for a 0 full length right now, but will be heading out into 20 defree nights. Thought this might be a viable option. Has anyone ever tried it successfull?

I've never tried stacking two 3/4 UQs. I've stacked an HG Phoenix 3/4 UQ under a full-length HG Incubator 0* (the temp was -3* F).

I would not try to overlap them to make an equivalent full length - that doesn't sound like a good approach. You'll end up with a 40* strip and a 30* strip at each end. Just stack them as they are, and make sure you have a pad or other insulation in the footbox to keep your feet warm. That's where the issue is going to be.

I have used my HG 20* 3/4 Phoenix in 20* weather, but never again. My feet froze. I now use a 10* cushion between my quilt rating and the expected lows so the lowest I ever take my 20* Phoenix is 30* F.

It would be more like "stacking" them. There are some threads discussing this. Google search

It will work if done correctly or you could supplement the 30* UQ with a pad for an easier solution.

Maybe I'll go with the 30 degree, plus at least a partial pad, if not using my Gossamer Gear thinlite pad, and maybe for a little added insurance I'll use my Dutch Argon winter sock.

I would be worried about air gaps somewhere that would result in cold spots

That'll work but it can double the fiddle factor if you move much.

I would just try to insulate past your knees. Anything will be lighter than carrying another UQ. Hey SilverSufr, while we're on this topic, what do you use to keep your legs and feet warm in your 3/4? I'm almost regretting my 3/4 because I end up having to carry other stuff to account for my legs and feet and at that point it's actually heavier than a full length.

I don't think the temperatures for your quilts would match the temperature you're reaching for. If you'd stack them side by side, I think the problem would be the limited warmth provided by the quilts individually. A gossamer gear hammock pad or a ridgerest should get you down to those levels with your quilts stacked. You can always try a quilt protector with them as another relatively cheap option.

I use my 40* 3/4 UQ down to 50* F, and my 20* 3/4 UQ down to no lower than 30* F. I like a 10* cushion between the quilt rating and expected lows. I don't even need a pad or anything with my 3/4 UQs since I'm not trying to push them below their limits.

My first UQ was a 20* 3/4, and of course I tried to push it lower than its limits. The lowest I ever went with my 20* 3/4 UQ was 13* F, and my feet froze with a pad in the footbox wearing down booties. My feet even got cold as low as 25* F. That's when I decided to go with the 10* cushion and haven't had a problem since.

Anything below 30*, I'm bringing my 0* full-length Incubator. Anything below 10*, and I'm stacking quilts!
