I learned quite a bit on this project, mostly what I learned is when not using 6" or smaller traditional longitudinal baffle spacings, karo step or other, there is a lot more room for the down to pillow and needs more down to fill it to a level where the down won't shift. My baffles were 1.75" and I intended to get about a 2.25-2.5" average loft aiming for 20deg rating. I had put in the 14oz I calculated and it just wasn't even pillowy. Added another 4-5oz and now it feels closer to a puffer jacket. Because the baffles are further apart the pillows can be higher which by my laser eyeball looks more like 2.75-3.25 for an average. Should be plenty warm. I am going to do a matching under quilt that is more traditional with the longitudinal baffles, except I am going to stop the baffles short by one baffle width from being sewn right into the ends, that way I can stuff the down in one go like this one. That really is a huge advantage to karo style or non-continuous baffle quilts, and I think I'll keep using it going forward. I used the shop vac with a tube and noseeum mesh to capture and transfer the down, which really worked a treat. Thank you to whoever thought of that one first really saved me time.
Finally, Thank you everyone here on HF for being so forthcoming with their projects and DIY tips, I know I wouldn't have tried this project at all without gaining some confidence by seeing all of your projects.
Thank You!
