Thumbs up Crazy Baffle Pumpkin Spice Top Quilt Project Complete

Here was the concept layout for the baffles.

And here is the finished product.

    Final specs,

    52"x78" Drawstring and omni-tape footbox
    -1LB 9oz total weight
    -18oz Approx fill weight
-.9oz membrane orange and grey, noseeum baffles, from RBTR

I learned quite a bit on this project, mostly what I learned is when not using 6" or smaller traditional longitudinal baffle spacings, karo step or other, there is a lot more room for the down to pillow and needs more down to fill it to a level where the down won't shift. My baffles were 1.75" and I intended to get about a 2.25-2.5" average loft aiming for 20deg rating. I had put in the 14oz I calculated and it just wasn't even pillowy. Added another 4-5oz and now it feels closer to a puffer jacket. Because the baffles are further apart the pillows can be higher which by my laser eyeball looks more like 2.75-3.25 for an average. Should be plenty warm. I am going to do a matching under quilt that is more traditional with the longitudinal baffles, except I am going to stop the baffles short by one baffle width from being sewn right into the ends, that way I can stuff the down in one go like this one. That really is a huge advantage to karo style or non-continuous baffle quilts, and I think I'll keep using it going forward. I used the shop vac with a tube and noseeum mesh to capture and transfer the down, which really worked a treat. Thank you to whoever thought of that one first really saved me time.

Finally, Thank you everyone here on HF for being so forthcoming with their projects and DIY tips, I know I wouldn't have tried this project at all without gaining some confidence by seeing all of your projects.

    Thank You!

Crazy baffle definitely fits the bill. I love seeing people try new things just to see how the turn out. Looks great and thanks for sharing!

Oh wow! Very cool.... I mean, WARM! Nice job! I hadn't realized there were even other options for under quilts other than the traditional, long baffles. I think I have a lot to learn about these.

Nice design to keep the down in place. What do you estimate the temp rating on this quilt is?

Not sure honestly, I don't have anything to compare it to. Average loft is probably 2.5+ so from what I've read it should go to 20deg or lower I think. Not even sure what a normal down quilt should feel like. It lofts fine but it just looks like it could use some more even. Just glad I didn't go with thicker baffles because I'd never get it full with this baffle configuration.

This one is a rectangular top quilt bit I'm making a matching underquilt to go with it.
