What sort of thread should I use for hammock/tarp projects?
I am new to DIY sewing. I plan to start with Ripstop By the Roll's $10 stuff sack kit, then if that goes ok I will do something harder.

Get the Guttermann thread from their website. They have all the matching colors.

Gutermann Polyester is a great choice, or the Mara thread from RSBTR. Basically any thread that doesn't have cotton in it.
"We are the greatest bulldozers to walk erect. Will we ever permit Mother Nature–truly our mother–to do her thing, undisturbed and unmarred? Will we ever be content to play a passively observant role in the universe, and leave off this unceasing activity? I do not wish man in control of the universe. I wish nature in control, and man playing only his just role as one of its inhabitants."— Randy Morgensen, 1971
I've had great results with the Mara from Dutchware

Good plan on starting with the stuff sack. You've got enough material to do several, so no worries if you have an accident on one. Like others said, MARA70 is a great all-around choice. For thicker fabrics like the ROBIC 420D, I do switch to the thicker MARA50 on occasion.

Do i need 2 spools? One for the needle and the other for the bobbin? Is the MARA much thicker than normal sewing thread?

You load the bobbins with thread from the spool so you don't NEED two. With that said, I started ordering double everything years ago and now have a very well supplied DIY locker allowing me the flexibility to do projects on the spur of the moment

I prefer Gütermann Tera 60 over Mara 70. It's stronger but a bit thinner and slicker. I find it's easier to work with.
