I was tempted to try one and that massdrop price sounds good. I have tried to use my regular klymit v pad, but I actually preferred my ccf pad. This version is 48" wide, but I'm not convinced it would work well, laid diagonally in my blackbird.
Yea, I was just curious. I find it interesting that Klymit made a pad specifically made for a hammock. This hammock thing may just catch on one day
It was just released this year so I'm not sure if you'll be seeing anyone talk about it until that Massdrop ships out. The only video I've seen it in is here and it seems to be used in an ENO Doublenest so as not to give a diagonal lay, but a flat straight lay. Definitely an interesting looking product and at 28 oz not too shabby. Rather than a 21 oz underquilt (Warbonnet Wooki 3 Season full length) that's limited to hammock hanging 20* and up, this pad could be used on the ground with a ground sheet and a sleeping bag down to however cold your sleeping bag is rated to (in theory, I have an email out to them asking if it can go as low as my Klymit Static V2). I've used my Klymit Static V2 Insulated down to 10* with a 0* bag (plus insulated long undergarments, sweatshirt, and sweatpants with one pair of bootsocks) on the ground just fine, actually starting to sweat and needed to disrobe a little. Hammocks are great, but if you're going to a new site you may not have the convenience of two trees to hang between. It also has some nice non slip sections so you won't get pad drift through the night. Also at $140 MSRP it's a nice in between from the CCF pads and a twice as expensive (and single purpose) down underquilt.
I considered buying one, for the "that looks cool" factor. But I've used my regular Klymit v pad in the hammock. After 2 nights out with it, I came to the conclusion that I preferred a ccf pad. And it's R factor is a mere 1.4--buy a cheap synthetic UQ if you can't wait for a down.
I'm wondering if you could put a mylar blanket underneath it to raise the R-value a bit. Anyone got any tips?
I have the reg klymit pad and supplement it with the Gossamer Gear 1/8 inch pad. Its cheap, superlight, can almost fit into a soda can when compressed. I've used it to the the high 50s, very warm. I don't know how low it could go, but if I had to guess, about 50 is its limit.
