If its a remote location, and camp isnt visible from the trail, Ill leave my stuff set up. In the backcountry I'll willing to take that chance that no one is going to want to hike out with my gear, plus theirs. If its front country, or in a campsite thats easily visible on a highly used trail...probably not going to leave my stuff set up unless there is someone there I can trust to watch it, ie. a caretaker. That said, if I get a funny feeling that something isnt right, I'll pack it up regardless. Fortunately, most of my camping isnt base camp style stuff so this isnt usually a big issue for me.

I was in the army way too long to leave my shelter somewhere unattended. If something catastrophic were to happen shelter is a priority. I'd rather lug my pack then leave it somewhere.

Camped on a beach in Mexico one weekend. Came back from town and a beach chair was missing. Went back to town later in the day and upon returning the chair had returned as well. I guess what happens in Mexico stays in Mexico because the chair never said what transpired.

I go up to the Adirondacks a few times a year and never had or heard of any problems.I usually go with people that sleep in tents or leantos. I do take my hammock down every morning and put it in a tent or in lean to. I do hang a string to mark my spot so it's still there when I return. i take gear down since it isn't meant to be sitting out in sunlight all day. Second I've seen too many videos of bears trying to get into hammocks . Works for me , while water is boiling I'm seating up my hammock.

I was not in the military, however I never leave my gear behind. I have had unexpected cjanges in plans, it is very convient to be ready for whatever.

Trip and fall happens, unexpected weather, fires and other natural events.
I want my gear with me.

On my honeymoon in St. Maarten, the housekeeper stole about $800 in traveller's checks. My wife insisted I had gambled the money away. Next day, the $800 in traveller's checks was returned. I guess traveller's checks aren't that easy to cash!

I don't worry much about theft. Besides, this stuff isn't worth much money if you go by what my wife thinks I paid....

I do worry about wind. I like to be near my gear if the wind comes up. Wind changes things. Without wind, a storm is just rain.

I know it only takes one person. But if I'm hiking in places busy enough that I'm worried about getting stuff stolen, I already lost. I'm thankful to have a lot of nice places within a 4hr drive that keep me secluded and safe.
