Fronkey style bug net - What size shock chord?

I ordered my bug net, and it came with 1/16" shock cord on the bottom. I haven't field tested it yet. It doesn't seem very sturdy when I pull on it to cinch the net closed and will slip back through the closed cord lock (single hole) if I do a pull test on the closed netting (simulating having my weight on it when I'm laying in the hammock). I'm thinking of replacing it with 1/8" cord and a double barrel lock, instead of the single barrel lock it currently has. Anybody have experience, thoughts, or suggestions on this?

    Thanks!

I would try to find a smaller cord lock first. My fronkey net i found out where i liked it and if it worked well with my uq then tied and trimmed excess cord off.

I have three Fronkey bugnets and consider the shock cord on the bottom to be almost irrelevant. I never cinch up the bottom because mosquitoes aren't smart enough to figure out how to fly down, then up, to reach their target. Mosquitoes attack directly.

As long as you treat the bugnet with permethrin, you should be fine.

Seems a little late in the season for bugnets. Mosquitoes are lethargic at 60* F, and downright immobile at 50* F. I probably won't use my bugnet again until April or May at the earliest.

I've had the same experience as SilvrSurfr with my DIY Fronkey bugnets. I used 1/16" shock cord and and have it tensioned so it's barely contacting my UQ when I'm lying in the hammock. I'm sure there are some small gaps but never had any mosquitos get up and inside. Leaving the bottom closure loose also makes it easier to slip in and out.

I'm using 1/16 in shock cord. I actually have it on two opposite sides that allows me to totally close the bottom. Works great for me and doesn't touch the underside of the hammock. Does come in contact with the underblanket when it is installed though.

When I used mine in the field it the cinch would open up from my weight pushing down on it. It's not very strong but if it was super strong and your hammock is pushing down it in you might tear it? I may have just had too much sag on my hammock though.

Nope, never close mine either, in fact I don't even have a shock cord on mine at all, I use 1" nylon webbing at a fixed length. The webbing loop is heavier than shock cord would be, but the weight keeps it from blowing around in the wind, and the opening is small enough that it seals up against my gear hammock when my weight is in it, but big enough that I can pull the opening up over my head. The webbing is also "meaty" enough that I can easily find the opening with my foot in the night

Likewise my mosquito season is now over, and my netting is retired until next season

The shock cord isn't super necessary. I wouldn't worry about upgrading beyond what you've got. If the cord lock is slipping you could try putting a knot behind it.
