DD Mesh Hammock Whoopie Sling Switchout

Hello and greetings from Kyiv, Ukraine.

I own a DD Mesh Hammock which is not suitable for sleeping in and weighs a hefty 600 grams. My hope is to shorten the mesh, remove the (heavy and cumbersome) tree straps and replace them with 7/64 6" Amsteel whoopie slings, thus reducing the hammock's weight by 20-40%. It could then be brought along and used as a gear sling/camping chair without the weight being too much of a burden.

As you can see in the picture, I have begun to unravel one of the cord lashings which forms the 'eye' through which the tree straps pass. My Q is: after the mesh has been shortened, what knot should I use to permanently secure the whoopie slings on to the gathered ends?

I'm certain there is a simple and elegant solution here - knot experts please help out?

    Thanks!

Would you be able to do a sewn in channel instead of whipping? Then you could just use a continuous loop through the channel and hook the whoopie slings to that.

kg8jk, I suppose I could... but it is a mesh fabric so do you think it can be safely sewn? IMG_6181 (1).jpg

Yes, many hammocks have mesh that has been sewn and is load bearing. You need some sort of transition fiber such as grosgrain ribbon or a bias strip of canvas.
Take a look at how to add a after market bug net. I would give a few fold overs of the mesh then the transition material then your channel. Make sure your thread tension is correct and do not inject your threads too close together.
