    Dramatic Heat Sucking Going On

I have to ask... many times when I lay in my hammock with an UQ, I can feel the heat being sucked out of me, after a while of this, I get goose bumps and then I get blasted by heat from the UQ for the rest of the night. Does anyone else experience this?

I understand the concept of me heating the quilts so they can hold it and keep me warm, but this seems a bit dramatic, and where it worries me is when I'll go out in below 30˚F weather.

This isn't going to help you much if at all, but when I shift the uq after being in it for a little while I can feel the warm/cool spots moving under me. This usually dissipates within 15-30 seconds. I sleep hot though. Maybe your body temp is on the cool side to begin with and you're right that the uq is absorbing your heat on contact and then surrounding you with it afterward. What you may be experiencing is kinda like the initial chill from a cold toilet seat.

This does not match my experience. If I have underquilts in place, I feel reflected warmth nearly immediately. The experience you describe seems like your underquilt needs adjusting.

    Good luck

If you're using 0* quilts, they can sometimes sag. Sounds like you could use some help snugging that UQ up (I assume you're not losing heat on top).

Are you warm or cold when you get in? Is the quilt and/or hammock warm or cold before you get in? Is it fully lofted?

    Thanks everyone!

    Yes, that's correct, I'm using a 0˚F UQ.

I don't have it totally snug, because it's only 50˚F right now. But I've got is snug enough at the ends to feel no drafts. Should I have it more snug, despite the temperatures? I've already woken up a bit too warm even when temps have dipped further, it's just the initial heat sucking that happens.

I don't think I'm a cold sleeper, maybe just normal.

I'm not cold on top. Once the heat returns from the UQ after 5 minutes, I'm toasty, but I've only got a summer rated duvet (down comforter) on top. I cold try my colder temp duvet and see what happens, I just don't want to be too hot.

And I'm not cold when I get in, but definitely not hot. Tired though, so maybe my core is colder than I think? Could very well be the outhouse affect that skidmark was talking about, with me heating the extra air between the hammock and the UQ being the toilet seat?

I know I've experienced the automatic heat before too, with it right up against me, but what about when needing to vent a bit?

I have a healthy, but low BP. I wonder if that's why I experience it that way.

In any case, I pulled the primary suspension a bit tighter, not completely snug (there's still about 1inch between my hammock and the UQ), and that's a bit too warm - and I only had my duvet on my torso. BUT, I only experienced that feeling for a few seconds, rather than minutes. So, I'll let it out a tiny bit tonight and see if I can find that perfect balance, then note what 50˚F needs.

One day I'll have a higher temp UQ, but for now....

    Thanks everyone!

Sounds like you had to heat up all the air between you and the quilt. I didn't realize there was space between the hammock and the quilt.

Yes. Should I do it different? Bring it right up then vent more with the secondary suspension?

I really don't have a suggestion, sorry. I have always kept my quilt snugged or off.
