Can the same poles used for porch mode be used for an external pole mod?

Having a hard time googling the answer to this question....

Basically just wondering if there is any way I can get away with carrying just one set of poles.
Use them for porch mode supports when lounging around the camp with friends, then switch them over to the side panel pull outs for an external pole mod when sleeping.

The poles I'm considering are the REI adjustable tarp poles or similar

See pics below for the two setups I'm talking about.

    Thanks!

Those are non flexable poles which will not lend themselves to be used as a top pole mod.

You can do both of those and also use some hiking poles as spreader bars on a bridge. Have you considered something like the Mountainsmith Trekker poles?? Yes, they don't flex but for the external pole mod that's not critical. You can substitute some longer dogbones, shock cord, or some other stretchy cord and get the same effect.

You could use your hiking poles for porch mode and carry a set of lightweight collapsible poles to use for panel pull outs. Check out this link for more info https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...-pole-tarp-mod

If you are doing both save the weight and extra gear/money by using hiking poles. I have used my hiking poles for both porch mode and for a over the top pole mod. I carry hiking poles already so this works out great for me.

Although I have tried the internal pole mod lately and it offers way more space for very little weight penalty.
Here it is in porch mode with no poles touching the ground. I borrowed some poles from an old tent I had from the ground days to test the concept. I will not be looking for some carbon fiber poles to make this mod lighter and more permanent in my setup.

Sorry everyone I should clarify, I'm not using hiking poles as I will be on a bicycle or motorcycle.

Having said that, if (fairly) non-flexible hiking poles can be used for the external pole-mod, I think the rei poles will work fine too. Shock cord or a couple of tautlines will probably do the trick.

    Thanks

I have used my pole mods to set my tarp up in porch mode. That way, I could use my trekking poles for other things like hanging wet clothes.

Hi Jack, I think you answered your own question. It sure looks like the REI poles with a little shockcord will work fine for porchmode and pullouts.
