I'm new to DIY and I'm in the planning stages for a new project - any suggestions are appreciated.
Here's my idea - I'd like to try using multiple layers of climashield apex (one layer 2.5, one that is 3.6)
for bottom insulation - they would be attached only to the hammock by a few sewn-on velcro dots - and held to the bottom of the hammock by piece of fabric (breathable and lightweight, like .66 oz Membrane nylon taffeta). That bottom piece of fabric would be sewn on to the hammock body with kind of boxed corners using darts (at least I think that's what they are called) so that there is extra space for multiple layers of insulation.
One short end of the bottom fabric piece would be all velcro or omni shield - so it can be opened wide. The sheets of climashield would be placed inside according to expected weather. Small velcro dots would hold the climashield to the bottom fabric and to the other sheets as well.
On the corners of the bottom piece would be small pieces of grossgrain ribbon with a tension buckle on the hammock body - so that the bottom fabric and insulation could be pulled snuggly to the bottom of the hammock, or left loose.
I think I could do this pretty light because:
-it would need less insulation overall compared to an underquilt
-there would some small weight saving because using hammock body for top shell and less equipment to hang UQ
It would also have the advantage of being adjustable to the climate.
Has anybody done this before? Does it seem like it would work?
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
