Okay so I am finally getting around to posting a planning thread.
Dates: Oct 21-23, 2016
Location: Torreya State Park, about 30 miles west of Tallahassee
Activities: Hiking, hanging, lounging, fun
Cost: $5 per person per night, paid at the Gregory House onsite
More info: https://www.floridastateparks.org/park/Torreya
Come one and come all to Torreya State Park, home of some of the greatest and most unique scenery in all of Florida. There's a river. There's a cool old house with tours. There are cliffs. There are hills. Like real, honest-to-God hills. It's unlike anywhere else in Florida.
The plan is to get one of the primitive campsites, probably the Rock Creek site (about three quarters of a mile hike from the parking area). We'll stay there Friday night, then spend the day on Saturday hiking, then head out on Sunday morning. There are 2 loop trails of about 7 miles each that form a rough Figure-8, and take you through a surprisingly large variety of terrain and ecosystems for such a short hike. If you don't want to do the hike, you don't have to. If you only want to do half, great! You can even do less than half, as one of the loops (the one on which we'll be camping) is set up kind of like a hub-and-spokes so you can get back to camp without having to go all the way around.
Here's a link to the brochure with a map: https://www.floridastateparks.org/si...r-brochure.pdf
If you'd like to come, please sign up sooner rather than later so I can reserve an appropriate number of sites.
PLEASE NOTE: As with all Florida State Parks, you need tree straps that are at least 2" wide for your suspension. If you do not have straps this wide, for less than $8 + shipping you can get some from Dutch (https://www.dutchwaregear.com/2-inch-huggers.html). Seriously, DO NOT come to this hang without straps that are wide enough. I do not want to endanger hangers' abilities to camp in state parks in the future.
Let me know if you have any questions.
