    Hammocking with a large dog

My puppy is six months old and 70lbs. It was cute and all, having it in my hammock, when it was 20lbs .. now it's not really an option any longer.

So what do you guys do? He's sort of used to having the option of sleeping close to me at night but usually sleeps on his pillow on the floor at home. He's only been camping once, about 3.5 months ago.

I really want to bring him with me but I'd be really bummed if I had to go to the ground. So hoping you guys have some awesome tips I can use

Just put a blanket right under you. Thats what I do when I get tired of sharing my hammock with my 55lb lab.

Below are some links to the dog and hammock topic. Just FYI there is a Google search box in the right frame of the Home page. This is what my search brought up.

Lots of good advice in those threads.

I take two with me sometimes, and I don't let them in my hammock. A dry place on the ground under your hammock/tarp is sufficient and sure beats what their wolf brothers have to sleep on in the wilds. He's a dog, after all.

There is also a doggie hammock thread in the DIY section, if that's not good enough for your rover. The "Flying Flea Bag" I believe and it looks like a nice option if you're inclined to try your hand at making one. Good luck!

My K9 is 105 lbs she prefers to sleep on a piece of Tyvek under my hammock. I treated the Tyvek with pyrethium, it seems to keep pests away.
By my pup sleeping under me
I get her body warmth when it turns cold.

Ours has a thick yoga mat that we cut to an appropriate length to sleep on. Keeps him off the cold, hard ground, keeps him out of the mud and warm and comfy. It's a little heavy for what it is, but it's worth it to me for him to be comfortable when I make him carry his own pack with food, snacks and his tether for night time. He deserves a good comfy spot to rest his bones on just as much as we do... but unless it's cold out, he usually just makes a wallow in the dirt to sleep in.

Alifeoutdoors pointed me out to a customized bug net that goes all the way to the ground. Works out great for my two golden doodles that are about 60lbs a piece

I started out with two individual dog tents that they packed in but I like to be able to reach down and give them some comfort in the middle of the night.

I too have the need to keep my dog close and would prefer to have him under me. That said , I have had suspension fail twice and have hit the ground both times. I am really nervous about whats below me and can't imagine falling on my dog. I'm sure I would maim or kill him. Color me gun-shy.

I really like that bug net with eh integrated floor.
I would rather be in the woods... my dog would rather be in the pool. My wife thinks we are both nuts.

The integrated bug net was from Bear Paw Design http://www.bearpawwd.com/net_tents/net_tents.php

Alifeoutdoors suggested a modification in his design that I got them to emplement with a curved zipper opening. So when not zipped up you can just drape it over your ridgeline.
