For science, I'd go with "gravity".

Putting the opening on the bottom will keep the clip from falling while holding on to the tag end before it's tightened. This happened to me several times this past weekend as I was trying to raise the strap with my hiking poles. With the opening down, the clip is "clipped" to the strap.

I suppose keeping my 1100 lb carabiner to the tree out feed side, as Dutch suggests for the dutch clip, would also place less strain on it, too.
On another note, I wonder if there is a thread where everyone confides whether they wrap the tree clockwise, counterclockwise, or mixed .... Hmmm...

    Ted...
Both to keep the hammy on just one side of the tree. Also, I can hang my gear hammock on the other side and it is next to me.

The key is to definitely put the Clip or carabiner on the side of the tree where it takes less stress.

Less stress on the webbing too.

Is it true that one shouldn't use the Dutch Clip with a hammock that has a structural ridge line? I read that on The Ultimate Hang. My plan was to use these with my Chameleon, or would that not be a good idea?

I've never heard of that. I use it with my half-wit which has a SR and can't even imagine what could be the issue.

Link to that article please? I can only imagine that you're confusing terminology.

To NOT use a clip with your Chameleon could be considered sacrilegious

I went looking in the Ultimate Hang book for that warning and I can't seem to find it anywhere. Do you have a page #?

I think this is what was being referenced off Derek Hansen's The Ultimate Hang site:
"The suspension must come off in a 30° angle from the tree/anchor. The Dutch Clips are not designed for hammocks with structural or integrated ridge lines and suspension systems where the suspension is pulled nearly taut across the anchor points. This puts too much strain on the clips and will easily exceed their weight rating."

Reading the page it sounds like the problem isn't the presence of a structural ridgeline but rather with hanging the hammock with the straps taut...which is not only hard on the Dutch clip but hard on the trees as well. Hammocks should always be hung at a 30 degree angle with or without a ridgeline, though I suppose that with a ridgeline the SAG in the hammock itself would be preserved even IF hung with the straps pulled taut at a near 90 degree angle. Even so, that should never be done, so problem solved for both the Dutch Clip and the trees!

I use my Dutch Clips all the time with my WBBB, my WBBB XLC, and my Dutch netless...all three of which have structural ridgelines and I've never had a single issue. Too bad Derek hasn't gone back and edited that particular section to restate what he was trying to say, more clearly...which, I have no doubt, was, be sure to hang your hammock at a 30 degree angle to preserve the weight rating of the titanium Dutch Clips. (Just as Dutch's included instructional card also states.)
