Fair price for 9 year old Hennessy Asym classic?

found a Hennessy Asym Classic for $85 on Craigslist, thought it was a steal.got excited, contacted the owner, and set up a meeting. Then I noticed in a photo from the advertisement it was made in 2007 and I backed out. Mostly because I felt $85 was about twice what it should have been and I didn't want a potentially unreliable piece of gear to depend on. It also would have taken a lot of time and gas to get to it.

Is $85 a fair price for a nine year old piece of gear? if it comes up again, what's expectation the longevity of these bad boys?l I know the manufacturer says "forever" but having never owned one was just curious.

This really depends on what shape it's in and how much it was used. If it was used only a couple of times and is in good condition with no rips, stress marks and everything is included then I would guess it's probably worth it. I would still offer less.... what's the worst they could say?

The best thing to do would be to meet and have them set it up so you can check it out thoroughly though. If they refuse, then I wouldn't go any further.

How old it is is less important than how many days it was used for & how well it was taken care of. UV exposure & mould would be my biggest concerns with any used gear (aside from obvious rips/wear).

I would have passed on it as well. For that money you can get a pretty good new hammock from a reputable cottage vendor.

I have had mine for 7 years and used it a lot. Looks like new. Hennessey is probably correct in claiming they last forever!

Not a fair price IMHO, not knowing any more. Perhaps half that, yes. The "Classic" design is also out-dated and too short for many folks.

I have a HH Asym UL, purchased in '05 from Tom Hennessey himself at Trail Days in Damascus, VA. I have heavily modified it for the better, but would feel $85 would be too much to ask for it now. It has gotten use over the years, but is still in great shape, though retired to back-up status.

For around $85 you can buy some good cottage industry hammocks. Pass.
