    Ultralight Bigotry

I'm getting a little tired of posts insinuating that ultralight backpackers are idiots. Especially when they're coming from a forum moderator.

When it would rain they would be hovering under my appropriately sized tarp, usually shivering do to no coat, looking out at their tiny tarp with their rain coat layed over their hammock to keep the UQ dry.

Then to top it all off in the evening around the fire we would all have to listen how light their pack was and how you don't need to carry this or that...

And you can totally forget if you accidently forgot something that they might have an extra.
Weight weenie and gram weenie are not terms of endearment. They are derogatory, bigoted and slurs. Would it be acceptable to refer to anyone who isn't an ultralight backpacker as a pound idiot? Of course not. Why are posts like OutandBack's tolerated? It is a direct violation of HF's Terms of Service.

Unless things change around here soon I am done with this place.

I actually have no issues with terms like gram weenie. I consider myself one. That being said, I think lumping us all into the category of not being prepared is a unfair. There's a difference between an informed ultralighters and someone going stupid light.

I'm not sure complaining here about one person is the best thing though. Maybe you'd be better off addressing O&B directly about your problem with him?

There are many people who think the exact opposite of you, that there is too much emphasis on weight. I seriously doubt one could argue that weight weenie or gram weenie are derogatory terms - in all likelihood they originated with the gram weenies themselves. You might want to consult the HF TOS, which says you should "not assume offense where none is intended..."

It's good to have a tough and even thick skin to enjoy all of the members. It occurred to me that even the fact that we have a big hammock forum makes us all one kind of "weenie" or another. I think I speak for most everyone when I say I think you contribute quite a bit here and you shouldn't leave the forum. You have a niche and input on light weight helps us all. The predominance of Ti bling, strong light fabric, cord and down speak to the acceptance of light and ultralight.

Hmmm....I don't know. It sure seems the backpacking industry has taken the term as a badge of accomplishment for those who are efficient enough to "do without" on the trail or exist with the minimum of gear. The folks that OB describes seem to just be poorly equipped mooches, undeserving of the term.

I second zukiguy, using companions gear when you deliberately left yours behind is not proper etiquette at least to my way of thinking. I am a loner so if I forget something I need it is just tough.
People do die because they do not have proper gear for the conditions they find along their adventure.

Guess I am not very quick to take offense at a teasing bit of gentle teasing. I took O&B comment as more of a teasing comment than a derogatory declaration.

First, I think thicker skin is needed. Everyone's too sensitive these days.

Second, OutandBack has a perfectly valid statement. You must understand, there are those who choose to lighten up their load the best they can, and then there's others who feel they don't actually need to carry anything, as opposed to lighter versions of stuff. Those who are pretentious and arrogant about how little they carry, yet constantly rely on others for gear they feel they didn't need, are down right annoying no matter who you are. And to say that you've had experience with them and had enough of it, is perfectly reasonable.

Well we went through this with the term Noobs, Noobies et al.
Weenies? Gram weenies. Weight weenies. We are backpackers. Aren't they just terms of endearment?
Should hammock campers just hike with fellow hammock campers? Tent folk with tent folk? Cuben tarp people with cuben tarp people?

I have backpacked with ultralight backpackers and been an ultra light backpacker. Wiped with two squares of TP. Ick.
I've been a pack mule...slowing down the walk. Ugh.
Should pack mules only hike with pack mules....or Weight Weenies?
Gram Weenies (UL'ers) hike only with Gram Weenies.
Then the Light Hikers can walk fast and sparse. And eat their ramen and have no dessert and shiver through the night. Whilst cleaning themseves with 2 squares of TP and foregoing toothpaste.
The Weight Walkers can trudge on and enjoy their luxuries at days end. Using a half roll of TP with their morning constitutional. Eating high on the hog with ample dessert as they tuck into their tricked out hammock and overstuffed insulation. And huge tarp.

Hate to see you (OP) leave over this. We have obviously run out of problems in this hobby. Maybe the OP is just having one of those days.....wink.
I shall now start gloating about my sorta light but comfortable load.
Call me a Somewhere in Between Heavy & Light Weenie. Or call me a Hot Dog.
I'll accept it with pride and a sly smile and chuckle. I love my stool.
