Once you start down the dark path there is no returning to the light. Pun intended.

PC&C, I NEVER figured you for a gram weenie!

I got all my stuff out and weighed it once upon a time, put it all in lighterpack, made a spreadsheet and whatnot.

Heck, it is what it is. I have what I have. I take what I take, and it weighs what it weighs. I'm over it!

35lb full load before the scale
    25lb full load after

My back, knees, feet, lungs, and heart are thanking me every step. I attribute 90% of my weight savings to that little $9 scale

The scale was basically free, since we already had one.

What's not free is buying gear that weighs less than what I already have.

I do try to take care to make wise purchases, and buy gear that makes sense both in terms of cost and weight. I have a good idea of what I can upgrade as my budget allows for a reasonable price and what i'm basically "stuck" with because the upgrade doesn't make good sense fiscally.

My base weight for a 3 day 2 night trip is in the 20s. I can deal with that. But I'm not going to continue weighing every little piece of gear to save an ounce here or there unless it becomes necessary. I have better things to do like waste all my time on these freakin forums!

That was pretty much my same reason for investing in a kitchen scale as well. It's saved me from investing in a number of "upgrades" that would've ended up adding more weight than functionality probably. I'm no gram weenie by any means (my pack weight is usually 30 lbs), but I'd like to do my best to prevent it from exceeding that current weight when looking for new gear.

I have so much gear, I'm actually afraid to add it all up. New materials and engineering make everything lighter and lighter. Do you need it? NO. Do you want it? YES!

I would love to buy a scale. I even stare at them in the store for a bit trying to justify the cost.

The problem is, I sometimes find myself trying to add weight to my pack to make it a little more challenging and also to help me in the fitness department.

Total weight, skin out, is low 20-22. Including water, food, hiking clothing and poles.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Man, you southern guys. If I didn't hate the heat and humidity so much I'd move just to save weight!

Never really a necessity. It's a mindset. Carry less, lighter gear and it helps in more ways than one.

    Good point.

This is 3 season hiking, Spring -> Autumn. I haven't checked for Winter with jackets and such. I would add the weight of Down jacket, thicker socks and sweat pants to sleep in. If really cold (20's here, maybe a few weeks), I would also add a Down vest and extra dense snacks, my larger TQ/UQ combo.
