How do you clean tree sap off your hammock gear?

I went on a car camping trip this weekend with a couple of the guys from my Trekking Recovery group, and all the good trees to hang from all had sap oozing from them. It seemed inevitable that my tree straps were going to get sticky, so I just bit the bullet, and went with it. Now that I'm home, I'm trying to figure out the best way to clean the sap off these straps. What do you folks recommend for this?

Try nail polish remover or alcohol based hand sanitizer.

Sap happens. Personally, I just rub some dirt on the sap and it's no longer sticky.

This is the safest bet, nail polish remover and other cnemicals can eat away and weaken the straps, get a seperate sap sack for your straps and just try and avoid it in the future.

I've heard tale somewhere that placing the afflicted item in the freezer, causing the sap to freeze, will allow you to scrape it off. Haven't tried it, but could that work as a chemical free method? Just a thought.

My initial thought is that it'd likely take care of the sap on the surface, but there may be some residual between the threads. I'll give it a shot and report back on that tomorrow.

Put them in the freezer. You'll be able to peel the sap off the surface of the straps. Won't help the sap that may have penetrated the weave of the straps though. If it's still sticky, do as SilvrSurfr and rub some dirt on it.

Seems like you could hand wash them in some hot soapy water. Wouldn't take so long for just straps.

The freezer method was proposed for sap on tarps if I remember correctly.

I like SS's answer the best so far. Just rub some dirt on it. =)

Clean? Add dirt, I like. Eventually it will harden and then turn to powder. Unless it's on a car then it eats the paint - so does the alcohol that removes it.
