    Barking deer and sleepless nights

Southwest Virginia had beautiful weather this past week, with warm, clear, star-lit nights. I tried hanging out in my yard two nights, only be be awoken periodically throughout the night by barking deer. Yes, white-tailed deer bark (check YouTube). It's a louder, more aggressive sound than the daytime snort. It sounded like it may have been coming from one particular deer, who at times, from fairly nearby, circled my hammock and barked. I had little sleep those nights, and have about given up hanging overnight in the yard since I continue to awoken. Deer roam all throughout the neighborhood - the most I counted at one time was a couple of years ago - 21! Looking forward to getting back out in the woods where it seems to be more peaceful!

Can't find any "barking deer" indigenous to the United States. You sure it was a deer?

I had a friend say he heard one barking in Mississippi one time but I didn't believe it.

The roe deer in that video is European. There are no roe deer in the United States.
