COSTCO Down Throws / Comforters Back On The Shelf

Last night I walked around in our local Costco and found a section with those Down Throws or comforters that generated a lot of discussion on the forums last year. They are only $19.95 and the fabric they used (appears) to be something like a sil-nylon that is not breathable ( I tried to force air through it with my breath and it was like the sil tarp for breathability. This made me put it back on the shelf thinking if it does not breathe, then it may condensate under my hammock. I was thinking I may have found a "cheap" lightweight summer DIY type underquilt! Anyone had any issues with condensation or finding these too "hot" for use as underquilts or even top quilts? I know "cheap" is you get what you pay for!

My local Costco also has several pallets of them available. If nothing else, I think they would be good for emergency use in a vehicle.

Also, one thing that I like to do in the winter is distribute blankets to homeless people in Pittsburgh. I usually buy surplus wool blankets, but these may work well for that purpose.

Awesome thing, we give away a money collection every couple of months may do this when it gets cold this year.

I picked up several at the Costco in Norfolk, Va today. They will be given to the Outer Banks homeless this winter. Can't beat $19.95.

Since I do not winter camp, this is the only UQ/TQ that I use. I have not had any issues with condensation or being too hot, even through this past summer. On an overnighter in August, I used UQ only with no TQ and not a breath of wind and slept at a very comfortable temp.

The quilts are in-store only, although you can get them on Amazon for a much higher price.

The quality seems to be decent, no feathers falling out or anything. Stitching can be ugly in some spots, but sturdy, nonetheless. Their claim to a minimum of 75% down seems to be true based on the one I cut open. The baffles are sewn through which can cause cold spots. I made two top quilts with the intention of stuffing one inside the other to boost the temp rating and to help eliminate cold spots by alternating the positions of the seems.

I cut 9" off of one, it weighs 13.8 ounces. The other weighs right at 15ounces, in the stuff sack.

I purchased two at the Nashville Costco today. There appears to be one or maybe two new colors I didn't see last year. Mine are definitely breathable, same as last year.

For the price, they can't be beat. I took two last month on my two-week AT hike in Maine, a modified UQ and a modified TQ. They were perfect.
