    Sewing Kevlar tree straps

Like many of you, my suspension is a constant state of change...

I have two sets of kevlar tree straps and I want to add a second end loop ala tree huggers. I have access to a sewing machine, but I know NOTHING about sewing.

Please give me some help here... Do I need a special thread? A special stitch? Fairy dust?

All I want to do is fold over the end and make/sew a loop.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

To answer the OP's question a little more clearly, they come from Dutch bar tacked. Most climbing gear is stitched using bar tacks so I think that stitch is pretty common for holding weight and taking load. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Dutch uses Guttermann mara 70 tex 40 thread. If you want thread to match it's color #580.

So I want to thank you for the help here... Not only was it a waste of time, but following your link toasted my iPad.

Was that supposed to get a chuckle ?

    My apologies MikekiM.

There are a number of old threads where the most effective way to sew tree straps was discussed. The link is a Google list of links for your convenience.

I enjoy pouring over old research and thought you would benefit from it as well.

The answer for your purposes is to bar tack the ends together using four or five parallel lines.
    Use outdoor thread.

Here's an image on Dutchware's site on what the bartacks should look like:

These post say nothing about what thread or stitch to use. In this thread there is discussion on how to cut and finish the kevlar. This thread is discussing sewing nylon. I searched high and low for this same question and came up with nothing. If anyone has actually read threads discussing this issue please post them. Also, what's outdoor thread? Yes, I googled it ... http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Outdoor+Thread

We use Mara 40 Gutterman polyester thread. We run 5 bar tacks. We have an industrial box stitcher but it doesn't work well with Kevlar. However if you want to make a couple box stitches, that will work fine too. In the end, sewing Kevlar in not different than any other webbing. Enough stitches and it will hold.
