    THUNK

That's the sound my body made this morning when my nylon hammock strap broke just above the marlinspike hitch....

I am thankful my dog chose NOT to sleep underneath me last night, as she sometimes does.

I re-hung it using some nylon that was triple the width and test rating.....If that doesn't work, I may have to pry open the vise-grip clamps on my wallet and buy an actual hammock suspension system
    "Normal" scares me...

You know what they say. Do not hang any higher than you are willing to fall Yea, hammock suspensions aren't that expensive and tend to last many many years.

I've fallen twice due to ESTO (Equipment Smarter Than Operator) but have yet to fall due to equipment failure. Neither way seems very pleasant IMO. Hope your next set of straps treats you better!

There is a reason that us vendors test and test and test and test the materials we use for suspensions. A reason we buy high grade webbing from reputable manufactures and a reason why it takes us months to bring new products to market.

If your vise grip is still strong perhaps you could squeeze $4.00 out for the infamous Harbor Freight cargo straps. The last ones I purchased were orange, they used to be $3.99, and they're now a budget breaking $4.49.

I've never had those fail, but as Sgt. Rock says, if you use these you're gonna die!

hmmm those just might support the weight of my carcass....I'm quite the 'bloated sack of protoplasm' at 268 lbs. and I was just at HF two days ago for their big sale too.

I'm 240ish and hang off the Harbor Freight straps, so far without incident. (Sorry Paul!) I just used a pair of pliers to hold them and an angle grinder to cut the buckles off.

If you're industrious you could save the buckles by cutting a little strap off and sew your own end loops.

Either way they seem to hold up pretty well, as far as I'm concerned. They are a very bright orange, but they start to get dirty after a while!

You ARE gonna die, I'm 190, you should use 2" straps! Just kidding, but at 268# of solid muscle you might want to consider something more substantial.

If you buy the cargo lashing straps, the buckles will easily just break with a couple of pairs of pliers or slip joint pliers aka channel locks.

And us users that do not have a vice grip wallet, we appreciate what your vendors do to save our skin.

You know, as much as I hated doing the Hennessy hitch, I knew it wasn't going to fail. Hung over a big pointey rock on my first hang ever. Not smart, but it was clear the rope hitch was not going to fail - coulda been other things that I didn't think about at the time, though... (shudder).
