    DIY winter tarp

Ok so maybe a winter tarp was to ambitious for a 3rd project. But I think even with its flaws it will work great.tarp.jpgtarp 1.jpg

One thing I did change was the tree attachment. I didn't like running my am steel around the rough bark so I used some generic straps from Dicks. tarp tree strap.jpg

I would encourage anyone to make your own equipment if you like to though. Even with the mistakes I am still proud of my first big project and I know the experience will make my next work out even better. Still not sure how I got one of the support patches on the wrong side tho. tarp tie outs correct.jpgtarp tie out wrong.jpg

As long as it works, I call it a success. Nice job.

Don't feel bad. I stitched a ridiculously perfect ridge line first row of a felled french hem. nearly an exact 1/2' from the edge. The edges were dead even the full length of 12 feet.

Then I realize the outside and inside were together instead the two insides together. One side has the tabs out and one in. I have to rip 12 feet of perfect stitching now and do it again. One edge shortened about 3 inches too. I'm going to put scotch tape on the foot so it slides better.

Still all very worth it in the end.

I cut a hole in my downproof fabric on my last quilt build. Piece of packing tape on the inside is barely visible, and the owner doesn't know my secret!

Point is, you'll make less and less "mistakes" as you learn. Great looking tarp! Congrats on being done and underneath it!

I wish nature in control, and man playing only his just role as one of its inhabitants."

Perfection is overrated. Wandering lines of stitching, puckered fabric, mismatched lengths and rows of empty needle holes give your gear character!

Thanks everyone. Sounds like we are all in the same page when it comes to our "own" made equipment. I did end up inheriting a walking foot from my daughter-in-law (since she wasn't using it) and it's much better at running the material through.

What is a walking foot? I'll have to look that up. It keeps coming up in my DIY reading.

I'm in the middle of a 12' Hex tarp now. And I messed up a few things already. Lol.

The most notable so far was that my ridge line reinforcement patch was crooked and so I seam ripped it figuring I had to silnet the whole area any ways and when I sewed it back on, it was crooked again. So I'm debating whether or not it's worth starting over again.
It looks great by the way and you made it! Perfect or not it is the fruit of your labor and you should be proud.
    I love to create!
