The Flying Fleabag: A gathered end-bridge hybrid dog hammock

Ever since I started hammock camping I was trying to imagine how I would continue to do so when I got my next dog. I quickly decided that he was going to need his own hammock too. Once the dog arrived and he got old enough, I began to design and try prototypes of different designs of dog hammocks. The perfect dog hammock needed to:
    • Hang from my hammock suspension
    • Protect him from bugs
    • Keep him warm
    • Be durable
    • Be lightweight (he carries his own stuff)
    • Be a familiar shape so he would be comfortable and not intimidated
    • Be stable

After an iteration that ended up way too heavy, I went back to the drawing board with what I had learned. I decided to go with a simple gathered end design with an internal bridge structure to make the hammock be more like my dog's bed at home. I'm happy to report the hammock design is a success! I checked all the boxes with this one and the proof is in the pudding. My dog has no problem curling up and relaxing in it.

Integrated bugnet will keep him safe from bugs.

The bugnet can be pulled away so he can have an open view and get in and out as he pleases.

The hammock attaches to my suspension and hangs underneath my hammock. There are stabilizer lines attached to a stake in the ground on each end.

The body of the hammock attaches to the tent pole pegs. The pegs also attach to the stabilizer lines and the underquilt suspension.

    UliHammockUnderquilt.jpg
Insultex underquilt should keep him warm.

The hammock hangs about 4 inches from the ground.

I can't wait to take him out into the wild with his new setup!

The hammock weighs 12oz, the underquilt 7oz.
    Hammock Materials:
    70d Nylon Taslan
    Aluminum Tent poles
    Nylon webbing and grosgrain ribbon
    No-See-Um bugnetting

Sorry, I just kind of made it up on the fly. I can give you some details about how that went, however. I started off choosing a width. I knew it couldn't be the normal 55+ inches, that would be way too much sag. So I used my tent poles with binder clips to grab onto the fabric and I played with it until i saw the sag I liked. I think it ended up being 38" wide.

Next I just made a simple gathered end hammock. I think it was 10' at first. I hung it up, saw it was much to long to get the lay I had in mind nor did it have the clearance I needed below my hammock. I played with the suspension until I saw the length I liked. I think it ended up being 50" or so. From there I just kept on hanging it, making adjustments, adding new parts until it was done. It's really really helpful to have a way to hang it up as you go. That way you can see how things are working and design new parts accordingly.

That looks great! Job well done. And the dog is very handsome.

Been thinking lately it's too bad I have not trained my dogs to sleep alone... they love camping, and they're good for added warmth, but I doubt I could get them both plus myself into any kind of hammock.

    Awesome hammock.
How easy was it to teach the dog to stay in the hammock and sleep?
How does he /she do when you zip it up?
I have no problem getting my 85 pound lab to lay in my hammock with me, not sure about teaching him to enjoy his own hammock.

Thanks! My dog and I have a rapport I'm quite proud of. He trusts that the things I ask him to do are beneficial to him. So while getting in at first was scary for him, he tried anyway and quickly found it was comfortable and relaxing to lay in. (Lots of treats helped too)

When I zip it up he was worried at first but I hung around the outside praising him and he quickly got used to it. He associates the hammock with positive connections (treats, praise and comfort) so he knows it's not a bad place to be and that he can sleep there. He seems to grow more sure that it is his place when I get in my hammock above him for some reason.
