Hammoch newbie needs help finding a suitable tarp

    Hi everybody!

I am new to tarps and hammochs. I am planning on buying a 11 ft hammoch from dutchware with whoopies. I need help finding a good tarp to go with it.

The weather can vary from sunny to high winds and rain. I live in Finland near the best lakes with tons of trees and trails. Temperature can go from summers sweaty 80 f down to winters -20 f chills.

My budget is $160 including international shipping to Finland, but excluding import fees. I did some research and silpoly sounds very intriguing. A tarp made out of silpoly is my dream, but I didn't find one anywhere. Ordering from another EU country would be the cheapest as extra fees could be avoided.

I do light weight hiking with a ground setup so the tarps weight is a priority. I am trying to move into the ultralight club!

I found this custom 19.4 oz DD tarp interesting, but it seems way heavy.

Hard to beat the Superfly. Lots of tarps in that range of price, but I think the Superfly is a little less than most. Dutch also sells the Tadpole which is just a little smaller, and while it doesn't have doors, you can buy them separately, or have doors put on by 2QZQ - the latter being a decent option on the smaller Tadpole because their doors create a vestibule, unlike the Superfly doors that angle in. Separate doors allow for less weight when you know you don't need them, IF that is something your environment affords.

Whoa! That superfly looks like a flipping palace! I've never seen a tarp like that plus it looks so cool. I wish I didn't live in a country where all camping gear is built on the 80's ideology. I almost got excited about the tarp I linked, but for slightly less weight, but higher price you get portable mansion.

The tadpole seems like a nice tarp. I didn't notice it before on dutchware website. Is it really worth its price?

I got a bit confused with that sewn on doors page. Would I need to send the tarp to them?

Thanks for the info so far. I am really trying folks to do research on this forum, but I am not the best with these thingy-pages.

I bought a Superfly last year and am happy with the design, craftsmanship and coverage. I would recommend the Superfly without hesitation.

I have a WB MamaJamba and love it, but given an opportunity to redo that purchase I would likely choose a Superfly.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Vakkilainen, have you seen the new European hammock shop? Doesn't look like he's got tarps (yet), but lots of suspension and ridgeline stuff you might also need... Dendronaut

Have a word with Scotty Von Porkchop, he's UK based and does very good bespoke gear at good prices. Worth dropping him a PM.
