It isn't permanent, per say, but I never use the shock feature on mine anywhere so it stays locked out anyway . Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLD_fHiVkZ8

I use 3/16 wooden dowels (something cents amazon with prime shipping, literally the box would cost more than the price). To have the mountainsmith poles get down to the spreader length (assuming its 39.5 inches), you need to cut the dowel down to 11.75 inches , for a 28.5 foot end spreader, the dowel needs to be 1.75 inches. This adds some support at the costs of grams, and allows for you to collapse the poles to the exact length without doing any measuring whatsoever, which is really nice after some decent mileage.

You can use the poles without the tips like pgibson does, but these fit perfectly, and protect my tarp. I don't mind the weight because i save 10 oz by replacing the spreaders with the trekking poles.
Anyhow, I ordered the parts necessary to mod my stock spreader bars yesterday. Cost including shipping was $20.
