    Draped bug net

Looking at the bug net on the DIYgearSupply.com site and it started me thinking. I understand how the zipped and cocoon styles work, but what's to keep bugs from getting in if the net is just draped over the hammock?

I currently have a ECO cocoon style, but was looking for something smaller (read lighter) and easier to get in and out of. Getting up in the middle of the night I sometimes forget about the bug net and step out of the hammock to a very unpleasant surprise.

Check out the Boone topper from Sheltowee Hammocks, it weight about 5 oz. It works great.

I drape my bugnet. A popular early design has a draped bugnet made with pockets to put rocks in to keep the bottom weighted down.

Mine just seals to the edges via gravity and hangs almost to the ground.

The Nexus net from Simply Light Designs just drapes and has rock pockets. I have one and it works just fine. Very easy to get in and out.

Yeah, but what keeps the bugs from coming up into the hammock?

It drapes around the hammock and seals up very well. I have had some gaps when I get on an extreme diagonal. If I lived somewhere that the bugs were really bad, it might be a problem.

I'm guessing treating the net with permethrin will really slow the creepy crawlies down. If not, you're basically looking at just stopping the flying critters. In most cases that's enough. So far I've never had a problem with being invaded by ants or other crawling insects. If my rig were set up in the same spot for a week that might be a different story but for just a night I've always been just fine.

Thanks guys. Guess so long as I stay away from Maine during the black fly years I should be okay.

Any idea what size hammocks that fits? I don't see dimensions for any of their hammocks.

The hammock it is made for is a 10.5' hammock, I used it last night on an ENO Sub 7 in an experiment and it worked well. It was windy and since it's fairly short on each side I had to use the end tie outs. The ends have a shock cord tie out that you can stake down, I never use it unless it's windy enough to blow the net enough to create gaps. I was really shocked that the net, sub 7 and whoopies all fit in the stock stuff sack of the Sub 7 and weighed in at 11 oz.

I have 2 fronkey style or bottom entry bugnets like Dutch sells and the Sheltowee is easier to enter and exit but the fronkey style offers more netting all the way to your UQ. In buggy environments that me be important to you. I have their cover as well, Alex makes a good product and backs it with real customer service. If you order just make sure you choose the nano-seeum and not the ripstop.

Just give Alex a call and I'm sure he'll work with you on whatever ridgeline you need, he has really offered me outstanding customer service.
