    Lightweight Toggle idea...

    Hi HFers,

I have been enjoying all of the great comments, support, and ideas on this site. I seriously doubt this is the first anyone has tried it, but want to share in case others have the resource to try. I saw an idea somehwere on here about someone using an aluminum arrow cut down to size for a Marlin Spike Toggle. I had the need to cut some of my carbon fiber hunting arrows and ended up asking for the scrap piece to try it out and see if it held up. I tried it on a hang this past weekend. It works fine and is super light. I asked the guy at the local BassPro archery counter to save me some scrap pieces so I can use them for this prupose. Hope this helps.

    Adrian

How about a stick from the ground? Doesn't weigh anything since you don't have to carry it
“The word hammockable (Meaning: two trees that are the perfect distance apart between which a hammock can be hung) is not in the dictionary, but it should be.”

A good idea just not a new one. The search engine on here is bad but there are tons of guys using arrow pieces and all kinds of carbon fiber goodness for toggles.

Sticks work great but if you always hike in at night like we always do. Having a toggle in a known location is one less thing on my mind when I arrive at camp with my head lamp on.

Now that we are talk about it, a toggle with my bear line might not be a bad idea.

I know you can use sticks for tarp pegs as well but same problem.

Good call on figuring out where to find light weight toggles. Keep your mind looking for ways to do something easier, lighter, or faster. That's part of the fun.

    Just my .02.

I use locally found sticks as well. I've never had a problem finding a decent stick, even in darkness.

I don't make my own tarp stakes though. That would most likely involve whittling and whatnot to get it how you need it, and you'd need a pretty solid piece of wood. I typically just carry a small pocket knife, not suited for work like that. It's easier just to carry stakes, but I will tie off to bushes/rocks to avoid using them if at all possible.

HYOH! If CF toggles work for ya then that's all that matters.

I always have tent stakes with me for tarp and hammock tie outs. They can be used as toggles as well. I admit, though, this place has turned me into a DIY gear head and I had a co-worker give me 4" sections from some bent aluminum arrows. Why go with what you have when you can make something cool? 👅

Just be forewarned that while some people have successfully used CF arrow shafts, there are also those that have had them crush.

In a pinch--a dirty sock can be rolled into a tight cylindrical shape and used as toggle. And if enough weight is applied by sleeping in hammock--sock will be clean in morning. As always test before risking your life! Have fun and be careful out there!

I like to use the chimes from a mini wind chime. Very small, solid and extremely light. It also has a hole to put a short lanyard to hitch it to my straps.

Life Scout, you might want to still use small sticks that you can break loose if the bag is stuck up high. It happened at the No UQ Hang and I was sure glad the stick was thin.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
