    Draumr Amok sleeping pad thread

Not to compete with the Shug Kool Aid thread, just a more targeted thread...

So I currently own four Hennessey hammocks, they're great but with a slooowly recovering frozen shoulder, I find sleeping in a gathered end hammock bunches my shoulders together and also forces my arms into positions that I find difficult to drift off in. A friend suggested the Amok and it really seems to be the answer. I'm committed to getting one. The only shortcoming IMO seems to be the cost for not-included sleeping pad (http://www.amokequipment.com/sleepingpads). I'm frugal by nature (my wife says there's a difference between frugal and cheap ), and I am reluctant to shell out $385 for a sleeping pad. Amok says that a cheap pool mattress will work, but all I could find was this one. Amok also suggests on their pad recommendation page that pool pads are "for relaxation usage", which I assume means "don't rely on these for backwoods applications".

So, I'm putting it out there, what have y'all discovered about sleeping pads in Amoks?

I have the REI Stratus for milder weather and the Exped 9downmat for serious cold.
No....not cheap but they seem to do the job.
A good and proper pad is going to be an investment.
The Amok needs the support to hold you properly and function as designed.

PS....The Kool Aid thread was not started by me by the way! I just showed one that I had.

Unless you're hanging in cold weather as a Amok owner I don't see the need for those expensive insulated pads. I used a BG air core pad with no problems, I did slide a piece of reflective over the pad once. As long as your pads tube run head to foot you're good to go!

I have an exped synmat 7 from my tent days. It's the long/wide version and it fits nicely into the Amok. For colder weather, I saw the exped syn 9 on sale so I bought that. Much tighter fit as it's thicker, but still a good fit. The 9 has an R value of 6 (i think) which can potentially get you in to negative temps. I've been in single digits with it and was still comfy. The synmat 7 got me into the teens comfortably. As SoaknWet stated above, you don't need an insulated pad, especially in warmer weather. The synmat 9 will probably roast you slowly overnight in spring and summer months. I use the 7 pretty much all year, but it's a pretty warm pad for temps around 80 F and above IMO. I'm not a fan of camping in hotter months anyway. I've read some really great reviews of the Air Core pads as well as other Big Agnes ones. If you shop around, especially this month and next, you can find good deals on pads. I saw the exped syn mat 7 for $99 bucks last year. I saw a video of the Amok recently and the guy was using a wal mart pool pad. it seemed to work for him, but I wouldn't trust it much in the woods, even though it'll be protected by the hammock. They're just not designed for that.

How full are you guys pumping your Ex9LWs to balance between support and still have enough flex for lounger-mode?

[for a measure: like how many fingers wide can you pinch one side-tube flat... one?, two?, three?]

Adjust to your comfort. For me I'd guess somewhere around half.

For those interested in comfort and low cost, I bought a large inflatable pad off eBay for $10 including shipping then slid my Z-rest over the pad and it worked like a charm. I used the same dimensions recommended on the Amok site so I got the right sized pad. It's held air for over 4 months now with zero problems. It's heavy duty with a tough fabric and heavy duty vinyl, but in as much as the Amok is not my backpacking set up I am good with it.
Happy Trails to one and all.

MMM~ and was that just a plain flat pad, or did it have the lengthwise tubes?
