    Uncalendered Fabric and Wind

I'm new to this forum and hoping to make myself a UQ and TQ. About 2 hours ago I placed an order with RBTR for some uncalendered 1.1 oz Ripstop Nylon because the only functional difference I could find at the time was that calendered was downproof. Since this is my first DIY and I'm a little budget-conscious I'm planning on using Climashield APEX insulation so I didn't think calendered would be needed for my purpose. However I just came across a thread posted by pdxhanger asking if 1.1 ripstop nylon was a mistake and craige responded that he should have used a calendared fabric instead because its more resistant to wind.

Should I try to contact RBTR to modify my order to a calendared fabric before they ship, or will I be okay with what i've ordered? If more information helps at all, i'm planning on making a 3/4 UQ with 5oz Climashield and a TQ with 3.6oz Climashield (and potentially doubling the insulation in the footbox for added warmth).

Excited to get to DIY'ing. And thanks to everyone for so much invaluable information. Loving this forum! (Again, new to this forum so I'm not certain I'm posting this correctly!)

+1 on that. Contact him ASAP. If the material hasn't already been cut for your original order, he'll cancel your order and let you start over fresh...at least that was my recent experience! I think you will definitely want to use CALENDARED material at least for your UQ, to help block the wind.

Thank you both - I will see if I can get this corrected! Would it be best to use calendared fabric for both sides, or just the outer shells of my quilts? Thanks again for your help.

You don't have to go with calendered when using Climashield, but like others said it does help cut wind by sealing up the weave. Going with calendered for the outer shell will make the biggest difference. Probably not much difference between cal and uncal for the inner.

Just let us know if we can help with anything else.

And there you have it right from the man himself.

Go with calendered outer and non cal inner. The extra touch on the outside as calendered is going to help with not loosing your heat due to the wind.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

+1 for the calendered on the outer shell. I made mine uncalendered with 7.5 oz Climashield. Earlier this spring temps dropped into low 30's. I was warm as long as the wind wasn't blowing. As soon as it started blowing, I could feel the heat being sucked out. As soon as the breeze stopped, I warmed back up. I'll be making and underquilt protector out of a piece of calendered ripstop before it gets cold.
