    Kayak hammock camping ideas?

    Como esta....

I'm looking to combine my two loves, floating a creek and hammock camping. I live in North AL but don't mind traveling a bit for a fun trip, what's some recommendations?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a fun 2-3 day float? Also, how do many of you go about finding a place to set up camp on the creek? I would hate to get slapped with trespassing.

Any info would be appreciated, looking for ideas, suggestions, tips, and stories.

    Thanks

There's already talk of a Suwannee trip but it's several months off: https://hammockforums.net/forum/show...rip-early-2017

Yes, the problem with posted property and river access is a problem in a lot of locations. I'm not familiar with AL paddling but I'm sure some other hanger/paddlers will pipe in soon.

Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area has almost unlimited options for nice trips. (I know its a long trip for you but it's a lot cooler up there).

No matter where you go, ask permission to use private land and always practice Leave No Trace principles. Have fun!

Thanks zukiguy, that sounds like a fun trip, I might be interested!

obxh20, very true about permission. I metal detect from time to time and its those who don't get permission that ruin it for the rest who try....

It's a bit of a drive, and not for the faint of heart in the summer, but we have 2 different "blue trails" in SC that are amazing. The Congaree and the Wateree. Both can be done in 2 nights with plenty of relaxing. Lots of public land, and in SC if you're below the high water line, it's not trespassing.

Where's the best place to put in for the Congaree ? I see that it starts in the heart of Columbia.

You can put in at the Gervais St bridge but this involves about 2 miles of rocky shoals and some fast water through the old locks. Not to mention you have to carry all your gear down to the water.

The next access is the Rosewood Boat Landing behind the quarry on the Columbia side, a couple miles upstream of I77. Just note that once below 77, there is no public access for 45 miles down to 601.

I can't recommend leaving your vehicle overnight at either ramp, so it'd be best to have a shuttle driver. Get Your Gear On may still do shuttles for a fee, but understand this shuttle is a half day endeavor for them. If I'm available I'm happy to help with shuttles or even do the float.

DelayedNeutron, thanks for that info! SC sounds awesome, would be nice to not worry about trespassing. There are some state parks in AL that allow primitive camping, so that's an option I might explore. Many of them have miles of shoreline.

Does your name have anything to do with the nuclear fission process that happens when a slowed neutron collides with U235? I'm a nuke nerd as well down in N AL.

Good stuff! All of our lakes are mostly utility owned or have developed shorelines. No camping.

As to my name, yuhp. Specifically, the neutrons that show up a bit late to the party due to their fission product decay origins. They might be a little slow on the uptake, but without them, we wouldn't be able to control any fission reaction! I'm a nuke engineering instructor.

    Kayak hammock camping ideas?

I work at TVA Browns Ferry as a I&C Planner.

If it weren't for TVA here, we wouldn't be able to camp on shorelines either. Being that they're a public utility, TVA allows primitive camping on much of its properties, which spans parts of KY, TN, AL, & MS.
