Ruby Hang - Northern Nevada - October 20-23

A beautiful area and not at all like most of Nevada...a mini oasis surrounded by 100 square miles of sage brush and dust. We will car camp in a canyon with cliffs rising 1000 feet in every direction, hammocks hung within 100 feet of the car and campfire. The stream is just a couple minutes walk and we have miles of water that parallel the road. Miles of trails to day hike, or more steam to fish than we can cover in one trip.

Hammock camp will be at the map link above....not much more than a wide dirt area to park in and a tree lined hill this will be a primitive area car camping trip. Come prepared, no running water, no bathroom (though there is a couple of pit toilets within a 2 mile drive both up and down canyon) and no cell service in the canyon. However we will have a good measure of solitude within the wilderness area just a short drive from the town of Elko, close enough to make a store run for supplies should we need.

The Fishing in the stream is some of the best anywhere in the region and one of the best kept secrets in the west. SSSSHH! Miles of tight bolder strewn canyon or high glacial meadows full of beaver ponds. 3 species of trout fill the canon and grow to impressive size for the volume of water they have to live in.

There is a lot of creek to cover and something for everyone that enjoys some fishing. Whether you like to work hard for each fish picking them out of small plunge pools or prefer to fish flat water there is some of everything within a short drive of camp. But there is also lots of trails to day hike for those that want to climb a peak and stand at 10'000 for the day.
Join us in October for one of Nevada's more hidden oasis in the desert,

I'm looking forward to this Paul. I hope we have a little less rain this year.

Waders would be a plus if you want to hit any of the lower canyon sections. You can get by without hitting the upper beaver ponds/meadow section....though you could cover more ground up there with them. But a decent bit of ground in the higher is ok for bank fishing.

In later October the weather could be in the 70's or the 40's so wet wading may be on the cool side. Sun will drop below the mountain around 4:00 give or take a little and it will cool right off so if you were to wet wade you will want to plan to be out of the water and drying off by then....not to big of deal as the fish activity also drops off once the sun is off the water.

I took a couple of pictures while I was up in the canyon yesterday. Had a little snow last week. Looks like the trees will be turning a bit earlier this year.

Looking down on the camp site.

Thanks for the update KSC. It does look like the trees will be popping in the next week or so...hope there is still some color when we all get there.

For reference in KSC's first photo we will be working to have camp set up at the upper center area of the dirt area there though depending on the group size and number of cars you can park anywhere along that strip of dirt and be close. This is a pull out area off the side road just before a gate/cattle guard that would lead you to the buildings in the second photo. Most of the trips in the fall when I have been down the gate is closed so you can't go to far but if you do cross the gate/cattle guard you are 20 feet to far, back up and swing to the right (south) into the open dirt area. Lower clearance cars should park right away as there are some rocky spots in there that you want to look out for.

Starting to gear up for the hang. I will have some gear there to check out and a small selection of stuff for sale at camp.

AHE Hats, Epic Wipes, a few 11' double hammocks (put in a color combo request if you want particular one made) Cook pots, fold up foot pads.

All of it will have a special Hang price, bring cash.
