Hammock virgin from the netherlands says hello

    Hi there,
My name is Greg and I am a hammock virgin. ;-)

I recently bought a hammocktent 90 degree hammock after much lurking here and watching countless videos (thanks Shug).
Usually I like to hike and canoe and don't mind sleeping on the ground in a tent. But last year while canoeing in Finland finding a good tent spot was sometimes quite difficult and the idea of a hammock came to mind.

My guess is that I wouldn't really like a gathered end hammock but a bridge or a 90degreeg hammock would suite me better. First option that I considered was the Amok Draumr, but because of the bulk and weight I chose the hammocktent hammock.

Sofar I didn't have a night sleep in it but I did manage to go out and set it up together with my tarp to see how it all fits. So I did a test lay. Can we count that as getting to first base?

Ofcourse immediatly I ran into minor difficulties: If the trees are far (more than 4 meter/ 13feet?) apart the suspension needs to be high in the tree. Almost higher than I can reach.
That also results in my tarp being higher that I want.

Trees close together is possible with this hammock, but my tarp has to fit aswell, so I need at least 3 meter /10ft.
Choosing the right tree distance will need practise I guess.

Anyway, I put some photos in this thread here https://hammockforums.net/forum/show...ht=hammocktent

Anyway, thanks for this great forum, I learned so much already. (but still don't understand the love for woopieslings)

    Cheers!
    Greg

I love my whoopies just because I don't have to undo knots or lines to adjust my hang, all I need to do is lengthen or shorten my whoopie sling. Plus I don't have to carry the weight of a carbines. have you used a trekking pole or a branch to try to move the straps up the tree?

    Hi Kattdogg,
    Thanks for the reply.
Great idea to use walkingpoles to get the treehuggers higher.

    I didn't think of that.
Doesnt the high suspension interfere with your tarp?

Thanks Ofuros. I quickly found out that there is a fiddling and tweaking factor with hammock camping. More so than with tents I guess. But that is part of the attraction I guess. 😉
