    Make Your Gear DIY underquilt

So I completed my DIY underquilt from Make Your Gear this weekend. Came out good, although I had some issues sewing the climashield to the fabric. Used the 6oz Climashield, inner fabric is the Argon 67 with the outer shell Argon 90. Completed, fits comfortably in the Bigger yellow dry bag that comes from the three pack from Walmart. With the bag, comes in at 21.8oz.
Haven't had a chance to test it or set it up yet, have to wait till next week, but I think it will work out nicely.20160722_234836.jpg20160722_234853.jpg20160723_001559.jpg

Nicely done. I think CS 6.0 is probably the ideal year-round UQ insulation for the part of the Puget Sound area where I camp, especially in a shorty. I'm going to try my hand at sewing some synthetic quilts soon.

Out of curiosity, what we're the specific sewing issues you encountered with the insulation, and what did you learn/do to overcome them? Thx 4 LMK.

Issue I had, was the apex being held back while sewing. After stacking the fabric and insulation, when I sewed it, I had the fabric on top to follow the first line of stitching and while sewing, the insulation was being held back. I was pulling it through, and it felt like it was going through cleanly, however by the time I got to the end of the fabric, the insulation was about 5 inches longer than started with. There is a slight asym shape to it now, but it will work. The channels are nice. Overall I like the design, and MYG did a nice job on the instructions.

Thanks for the info.. Yes, I was wondering if the insulation might drag or otherwise not feed perfectly under the presser foot of the sewing machine.

I'm hoping to avoid having to procure a walking foot for my humble little Brother.

I was wondering if cutting a thin strip of extra material to place over the Climashield and sew through (letting it disappear inside the finished quilt) might help sewing those long straight seams of sandwiched material on DIY insulation projects...

Looks great! I plan on ordering one myself soon and then having my wife sew it up. Really looking forward to it as it'll be my first under quilt and I'm tired of frozen butt sleeping!

I like that idea and I think it would work. Like a 2" strip so the insulation will slide being sandwhiched inbetween. Sewing the inner and outer shell and channels together first, it would be tough to flip it over and have the insulation on top. So I think your idea will work good. Next project is going to be a top quilt, and I'll try it on that. Just deciding on a design before I place my order.

You could probably use some tissue paper on the bottom and just rip it off afterwards. I've done two quilts with the CS down while sewing and did not have any issues, but I also had it pinned every 4-6".

Cool. That's what I was thinking. If you had the fabric width to spare, I suppose you could also just cut one of the shell layers 3 or 4 inches wider than necessary and fold the extra back over the I insulation as your "sewing shield". That might work also...

I had some significant trouble sewing some.seams with silnylon this weekend when joining two pieces with the "sticky" (inner) sides out in the first row of stitches; the bottom piece wanted to drag and the top piece wanted to pucker under a regular presser foot, so I'm trying to learn from that and do everything I can to make my upcoming Climashield quilt construction go more smoothly...

Oh that's a wonderful idea, and it doesn't add weight or cost anything.
