When you start hammocking, you can just start out with an insulated pad and your unzipped sleeping bag. After you spend a couple nights in that and enjoy it- you should invest in more advanced hammock gear. This is how I bought mine.

First I started out sleeping in my hammock on the porch
-JRB top quilt (duel purpose with ground camping)
    -Whoopie Sling suspension
    -HHE Hex Tarp
    -AHE Underquilt.

I know most hammockers say to buy an underquilt first, but I had no problem buying it last.
    Hope this helps.

Welcome from Maryland! I'm fairly new to hanging myself and I started by making my own with info I got from theultimatehang.com and Shugs vids. We can all give advice and tell you what works for us but the only way to figure it out is to buy/make a hammock and play around with it! There are a lot of lower priced options to get you hanging as far as hammocks, insulation, tarps etc... Heck, Walmart even sells a hammock that is pretty well put together. Do what works for you until you decide if its what you wanna throw money into. Good luck and happy hanging!
