I just tie off the loose end of the suspension webbing back onto itself about 10" or so from the hammock with an overhand knot, leaving a healthy sag in the loose strap end. I've had no problems in the rain.

In normal rains Shug's cotton shoelace idea has kept me dry every time for the last 5+ years. (Thanks!) In a few exceptional downpours, some water has made it onto the hammock. When it hit the lowest point it dripped to the ground, thus never much of an issue.
