Desi, I see your point. In the case of the Clark they use a different materiel for the suspension connection and run their standard rope through it in the same way the caribiner goes. The rope does not have any draw on the fabric like some of the gathered ends. In this case the caribiner is the same thickness as the rope and there is a good space between it and the first row of threads. That alleviates the prying effect on the threads.
I can certainly see where your method works much better on a variety of hammocks. As I recall when swapping the stock for whoopies the Hennessey used a series of wraps to help support it. I did something similar when I put the continuous loop on the head end of my Clark.
