Depends on the stand. The Tato Gear stand is designed to have mini biners you can tie a ridgeline to. So I put mine under the top bar on the ridgeline. It just feels a little more realistic than pitching over an aluminum bar.

I posted this in the Hammeck sub-forum, so I'm using the Hammeck stand, latest model.

I put my tarp underneath. If it rains with the tarp over the bar, you risk water running in along the bar and making you un-dry.

They designed the stand for the tarp to go under the bar. This gives you the most realistic hang and some tarps (like mine) may leak when the tarp is on the bar. That's why the stand is so purdy, so others can see it when set up.

Then you choose whether the tarp is over or under your RL with it all under the ridgepole.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

If it is not gonna rain I often go over. I like the way it hides the top bar, and since I am car camping, I can use the bar to hang my fan and other items.

If you like to put the trap over top of the ridge pole and would like to do it even when it is raining you can make "drip lines" for the stand that are a piece of amsteel with a fixed loop on one side and a finished end on the other. Then larks head the loop around the ridge pole and slide it in just past the edge of the tarp. you will want to make sure that the finished end hangs down past your hammock suspension and it is on the anchor side of the drip line for you suspension, so that if it makes contact with you suspension it will not give the water a direct line to the gathered end of your hammock.

I can tell you from personnel expierince that a tarp placed over the top of stand will allow rain to run to the middle of the stand and then drip on you. Have not tried it with drip lines.

This past week I rigged it under the pole and stayed nice and dry. Next time I'll try the "over the pole" method with drip lines. Always room to experiment!
