...soooo, everything said here was true. What our itinerary looked like at the end was not what was planned - but a great time was had by all as we just rolled with it.
The finally segments looked like this:
Day 1: Rock Gap -> Winding Stair Gap (4 mi)
Day 2: Winding Stair Gap -> Wayah Shelter (by way of Siler Shelter for lunch) (12 mi) <-- this was a rough one, with tough climbs
Day 3: Wayah Shelter -> Wesser Bald Shelter (11 mi)
Day 4: Wesser Bald Shelter -> Nantahala Outdoor Center (6 mi) <-- wicked descent!
Day 5: NOC -> Sassafras Gap (7 mi)
Day 6: Sassafras Gap -> Stecoah Gap (8 mi)
The daily mileage dropped after the NOC as we got a late start leaving and the climb out of the valley was pretty arduous. We pulled the cord on the trip at Stecoah Gap after my son tweaked his knee descending - and the fact that we had already been out an extra day. So, being that good Dad that I am, I taught my 18 yr old how to hitch-hike ...and we caught a ride to our our truck parked at Yellow Creek Gap.
Working on the trip report (trying to figure out how to load photos from Google Photos) and will post shortly. I just wanted to thank everyone for their guidance and help. It was an awesome trip and great time spent together in the woods.
