    Ultralite Hammock stand for hiking

I want to try hiking from Alabama to Burning Man in Nevada. This means hiking through the desert where there are no trees to hang. Now a Turtle Dog Stand is great and all, but it isn't very packable in a backpack. So I am wondering if anyone has seen a schematic for a light weight hammock stand that breaks down small enough to at least strap to the outside of my pack.

You could try and make your own handy hammock stand.

Well the first video I saw of this product, the cord broke and made the while thing useless, so I would say no.

there are many many satisfied users - myself included. But if you're after ultra lite you're always going to be pushing the envelope.

Well I have an idea in mind to make one from 1 inch PVC and 1 Inch Dowel rods that will be a bipod design. I drew up a diagram of what the leg pieces will look like for the most part.

I have built a prototype that breaks down to 21". I used steel tubing to build it to get the design right. It can be built with aluminum to reduce weight. I built for motorcycle travel so weight is not a big problem for my application.

There are pictures of it in mid design in my photo gallery. When pictures were taken it was @ 42" but I have since reduced to the 21". In pictures I used aircraft cable but will be replacing them with whoopies of 7/64 amsteel & angling the poles under the hammock so shorter guidelines may be used.

I have been looking for aluminum 1/2" lag bolts but cannot find them. It uses 4-10" & 2-6" for anchoring. I will be working on it over the next couple weeks & will post pictures of the finished product if I can get help with posting them. I have trouble posting pictures every time I try.

I'd flat out tell you to simply BUY a handy Hammock stand for what your attempting. I've used it a number od

That being said.. I use a 2x4 as a makeshift tree quite often. Here's an instance of using it to test a hammock chair.

I've used a 4' Professional Series cold steel Bigbore blowgun in a similar manner out in the woods when I find a great hang location, with less than ideal tree placement. If your not spot on with your angles (hang angle, guy line angles, etc) you can bend the aluminum bar.

I couldn't imagine using PVC and/or dowels. personally, I've broken 2x2's hanging off them, and like I said, a 1" hollow aluminum bar with 3mm thick walls can bend under the stresses.

Not to hijack the thread, but do you have any more info on this build? I made a 3x5' pack cover/gear hammock/ground cloth that I think could easily be used like this ;D
