    Question Down alternative?

Has anyone tried using down alternative instead of other synthetics for top and under quilts?

I'm about to start my first attempt at doing a project this big, I was going to go with the climashield but then I read something about down alt from Joanne's and thought if it worked better (down to a lower temp) I'd go for it!

Thanks ahead of time to anyone responding!

Skeptical but interested to hear how this works out.

For every innovation that has occurred on the forums, somebody had to be the first to try it. Who knows? You might become famous!

Surfer - I read somewhere it is something like individual pieces (like chunks) of polyester insulation. Has to be contained like down does.

Concept sounds good but . . . is it heavier than Apex? Is it enough cheaper to make a difference? How does it respond to being compressed?

Terri may provide us with some of the answers.

The problem that those "loose" down alternatives that need to be baffled is that if you stuff/unstuff them often then they lose their loft, and their insulation value. I think that Richard Nisley on BPL found that a lot of the synthetic fill looses about 40% of its insulation value pretty quickly. Climashield Apex is supposed to hold onto it's loft better than most of the other synthetic insulations, but it doesn't compress as well.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I think Syc answered my question... I don't want to spend the money on a whole project to find out that it doesn't work so I think I will go with the climashield for this one. After thinking about it all night a figured that the down alt would probably be useless once wet.
