    DD Underblanket

Looking into this as an under quilt; what do they use for the insulation? I see it weighs 33.5 oz, only a couple more than a New River, so my guess is Apex 6.0. Am I right in that?

They don't use Apex Climashield. I think know it's the same insulation that snugpak uses (snugpak used to make the DD underblanket). The snugpak uses their own insulation called "travelsoft".

Not sure if it's travelsoft, the DD underblanket is a full pound lighter than Snugpak's. Maybe the weight difference is in the shell?

DD says about the underblanket... "Ripstop nylon blanket with water-resistant coating, filled with 200gsm synthetic silk".

I am going to assume the weight savings with the DD would be 2 things, shell material and possibly DD weighs without the stuff sack. Also, the snugpak shock cord is enormous and heavy, the DD may use lighter shock cord.

The snugpak has a heavier shell material, plus those shock cords are twice the size of DD's....i would say the snupak has more insulation though. I didn't have them both at the same time, but from memory the snugpak is thicker and larger when packed

The dd underblanket has a soft ripstopp material , and thick shock cord. It can compressed down small. I do own one.

How cold have you used this down to? The price is good, given that shipping from the UK isn't too crazy to the US. I'll be looking into getting three setups most likely to keep the family warm this summer. I'm not so sure we need super warm UQ's, apart from whatever crazy winter adventures I personally go on. These might fit the temp, weight, and financial bill for us. Are they too heavy to bring backpacking in your opinion?

I have the DD UQ and have used it in northern Minnesota in Sept into the 30's and been comfortable. So that you know it was in DD Frontline double layer hammock and wearing medium weight fleece top and bottom.

FWIW I don't recommend the DD TQ which I also own, I was always cold and needed additional cover on top in circumstances above.

    YMMV
    Happy hanging

PS shipping from DD to US is super fast and I think still included in price.

Thank you! Maybe I will pick one up to try it. I think it might be the ticket for three season on the warm side use and maybe with an extra foam pad in the double bottom for a little extra I could use it in winter. I'll figure something else out for the top as you suggest.

I checked out your website and you do some fine looking work. Can't wait to see the hammock stand you'll come up with!

    Happy hanging!
