Arkansas. Ozarks. Sylemore Creek. Dewey dispatched two hogs.

dewey and i hit the trail friday and returned today [sunday].

HOT & HUMID [95+] but we had a great time, as usual. NO ONE on the trails; not a single hiker/camper/backpacker.

jumped a big mess of hogs. dewey dispatched two of the little ones. don't know if any of you have ever been involved in such with 20 or so hogs, but it's a non-negotiable event. it was ON before i had a moment to think.

we're tired and dragging. video to come. lots of good scenery.

CAUTION: this is NOT the ideal summer trail. if you're considering it and have never been there, PM me. it is doable but you need to do some serious water planning. i can give you the details.

    back to bed.......

I would love it if you would post more about that hike. The Mountain View area is an area I'm interested in hiking if or when we get that far North in AR, The dulcimer community is my original draw to that area.

You did a big public service by killing those hogs. Thanks for that!

coming up in a day or so! the trailhead is 5 miles north of mountain view.

it's a fine trail, but i caution anyone doing it in summer. it's deceptive in that it follows the creek but it's not ON the creek, and it doesn't cross the creek often at all. holler at me if you decide to do it; i can give you some planning ideas and water strategy. i've got my gps/x files i can send you for sylamore and some others in the area. let me know.

    cheers

Looking forward to the videos. Glad Dewey didn't run into a big nasty boar or sow, although I'm sure he can handle himself

there were at least 20 hogs in that wallow. it sounded like a bomb exploded when they broke out. they were all ages, with about 3 or 4 large adults. part of deweys advantage, i think, was the undergrowth. they couldn't really see him so they didn't know what was up.

it was as chaotic as the woods could possibly be, i can assure you. HOGS EVERYWHERE! dewey was running, barking and snapping like madman. as i mentioned in another post, when they broke out it was non-negotiable. i was a non-factor

    .......back to editing.........ugh..

Wow. It's a good thing Dewey didn't get hurt as that many hogs against one small dog can sometimes turn out much differently than this one did. I grew up on a hog farm and when that chaos breaks out your best bet is to get up as high as you can and stay there till it settles down. Looking forward to the video. I'm impressed that you would even consider hiking in the temps we are having. Glad Dewey (and you) are ok.

What section of the Sylamore Trail did you do? The area is a lot of fun to explore. If you are a runner, there is a fun race, Sylamore 25k/50k, every February.

i'm a runner and i've never heard of that race until this weekend. i've done many of that type in other parts of the state but this is the first i've heard of this one. maybe this feb.....

we did from cripple turkey trailhead to gunner pool. i was going to go on down to sylamore camp but couldn't get the miles in that i wanted and i had time constraints.

it was a tough hike with the heat. we had a great time, though. trying to take time to process videos and edit out as much garbage as i can

Thanks for the reply. Looking forward to the video. I am sure the heat was exhausting! Can't imagine what it would be like to spook 20 wild hogs!

Thanks sv! I'll holler for your planning ideas and files when I get up that way. That's very generous of you and appreciated.
