I went on an extended hike recently. Over the four months I did not worry about where I was going to sleep, easy options everywhere. Hills, roots, rocks and vegetation not really an issue. Less impact as mentioned above is big for me as is comfort. At one point I had rain at some level for 19 days in a row (I think). Hammock was still clean. I tent with my wife and even one day of rain usually means packing up mud in the morning. I can pull back the tarp or put it in porch mode and sit in a comfortable seat while I prepare food etc . . . The only real points I find better in a tent is you can spread your stuff around you in a tent and it is easier to dress/undress in a tent. Takes some flexibility in a hammock but after doing it so often, it did not bother me that much. Easy to put up the tarp by itself to sit under and eat during a rain storm. I had other people join me under the tarp, never had that in a tent but then again, I never set my tent up during the day to get out of the rain while eating lunch. Both really have pluses and minuses, but for me, unless I am with my wife, hands down I take the hammock.
