Overnighter location within 90 min of NY/NJ

Looking for an overnighter location within 90 min of NY/NJ. I'm usually solo and stealth camp in Harriman and a few other spots, but my buddy is a bit anti social, it's his first overnighter in years and is looking for something a little more remote. He's coming from NJ, near Cranford and is a ground dweller. I'm coming from LI, NY and use a hammock. Looking for a 5-7 mile hike in, overnight and hike about the same out. Any suggestions?

I always recommend the NJ Pine Barrens. Mullica River and Lower Forge are great hikes, and Batona is good for car-camping.

I've just about every inch of northern NJ trails. Are these more southern? Reservation required or can we just drop where we choose?

The LI Pine Barrens are infested with ticks. What's the situation in NJ?

There are ticks in the NJ Pine Barrens, but that's why they make permethrin. Camping at designated campsites w/reservation required. You can walk in and get a reservation, if there is a site available.

Stokes State Forrest is right on the AT at Culver Lake. Hike nobo or sobo of Rt 206. Technically there is no stealth camping within Stokes boundary's though, except at shelters or the official campground. Ticks, copper heads, rattlers, unlimited amounts of insects of all shapes and sizes, deer, fox, and bears.

You have no idea of my unique ability to attract ticks in spite of having carefully treating every piece of gear I own with permethrin. There must be a memo out informing ticks how to defeat my efforts. Shoes, socks, pants and gaiters all treated and still I found four on my legs after a recent day hike in NY's Pine Barrens...

I've hiked much of Stokes. Far less ticks than in the barrens. I'll confirm the copper heads and timber rattlers, deer and bear. Stocks is on my list of places, thanks.
Stealth camping? Me? I wouldn't think of it...

There is also Allamuchy St Park. Some folks have camped out there but I'm pretty sure it's unofficially. The problem is where to park so you won't get hassled. Oh, you can definitely find yourself walking in circles for hours if you're not careful. Skeeters and horseflies are the primary "birds of prey".

George of Loco Libre told me of a place in the Poconos where you can camp centrally and take various loops on different days. I'd have to look it up. EDIT: It's the Pinchot Trail.

Pichot trail is in Thornhurst PA, not far from Wilkes Barre PA. It's a figure 8 loop. You park in the center of the "8". You could do the whole figure 8 in a day, but you could easily just one half. Hike about 6 miles to the opposite end of loop, camp, and hike out.

Every day is a good day.
